This course examines trends in Latin American narrative from the 1970s to the present, examining the evolutions and shifts that occurred after the "Nueva narrativa" of the 1960s. In particular, we'll consider the testimonial turn in response to the dictatorships of the 1970s and 80s, the expansion of the canon to include marginalized voices, the manifestos of the 1990s and literary reactions to neoliberalism and economic crisis and the various literary experiments of the present. Authors we'll consider include Mario Bellatin, Elena Poniatowska, Osvaldo Soriano, Mariana Enríquez, Samanta Schweblin, Liliana Colanzi, Edmundo Paz Soldán, Mike Wilson, and Cristina Rivera Garza, among others.
