Latin American Studies: Critical and Theoretical Approaches

The course focuses on the main topics, authors, works and debates that constitute the current corpus of cultural theory in the Hispanic world, particularly in Latin America. The course will focus on the different critical and theoretical "turns" that have impacted critical and theoretical approaches particularly in the last four decades. The topics to be covered are: Memory, Transnationalism, Popular Culture, Ethics, Subalternism, Cultural Studies, Decolonialization, Indigenous Studies, Performance Studies, Feminism, Deconstruction, Cultural Policy, Transatlantic Studies, Gender and Sexuality, Affect, and Posthegemony. The basis for the course will be the chapters gathered in New Approaches to Latin American Studies. Culture and Power (Routledge, 2018) (also available in Spanish: Nuevos Acercamientos a los estudios latinoamericanos. Cultura y poder (CLACSO 2022), Edited by Juan Poblete. Other materials will be added to enrich the discussion of the topics mentioned above and to illustrate the work of particular Latin American cultural critics. The goal of the course is to familiarize students with current directions of inquiry, concepts and themes, and to explore the possible applications of new categories for the study of literature, visual arts, and performance, as well as for the understanding of social and political change in the context of globalization.
